It's Lent in Latin America

It's Lent in Latin America, and trust me, they go all out here. Far and away, the biggest holiday of the year in Guatemala is Semana Santa (or Holy Week), the week leading up to Easter, so even now, you can feel the excitement in the air.

Especially in the city of Antigua...which we happen to live 20 minutes away from. :)

Antigua is famous for one of the most extravagant Semana Santa celebrations in all of Latin America. The streets will be covered in "alfombras," or brightly colored rugs made of dyed sawdust, and thousands of people will flock to the town. Hotels have been booked for months. We're all pretty pumped to experience it.

Even this past Sunday when I went into Antigua for the afternoon, you could tell things were different. Hundreds more people filled the streets than usual. You could hear processions around every corner, and all the buildings were decorated in banners of deep purple.

Antigua is pretty much always a breathtaking city to visit, but even more so this time of year. :)

(This one has nothing to do with Lent, but it's just a reason I love Antigua. Those would be some local bartenders, playing basketball, in front of gorgeous ruins, with mountains/volcanoes in the background. This city is a mix of everything.) :)
